The ECDL qualifications are ideal for both novice computer users and intermediate users, wanting to improve their skills and productivity. It is particularly suited to those learners who need the utmost flexibility. The ECDL qualifications assume no prior experience and learners can start from scratch or dip in to those areas that they need to develop.

The new syllabus has been developed to incorporate new developments and technologies and the ever evolving needs of employers.

With the launch of the Version 5 Syllabus comes the combining of the previous Module 1 Concepts of IT and Module 2 Using the Computer & Managing Files, into a new Module 2 called IT User Fundamentals. There is also a new Module 1 which focuses on security in relation to the use of ICT; this is called Module 1 Security for IT Users.

So Modules 1 and 2 are completely new, and Modules 3-6 include new developments and have had less relevant aspects removed, whilst Module 7 has changed considerably to include new trends and technologies.

These changes have stemmed from both changes and developments in computer technologies together with the corresponding changes in the needs of employers and learners, and make the resulting qualifications both up to date and relevant in our modern society.

If you are delivering the ECDL as a single Level II qualification, then the above changes are those that apply.

If you are delivering BCS IT User at Levels I & II, then Modules 1, 2 & 7 make up the Level I, and Modules 3, 4, 5, & 6 make up the Level II.

The ECDL remains a popular and highly recognised qualification and this is probably due to its inherent flexibility.
