Mysteries and Role-Plays for 11 – 14s is a set of 21 activities designed for Geography students of all abilities. Each of the ten chapters contains some brief teacher notes; a mystery and a role-play surrounding a key geographical issue.
These issues are climate change, flooding, fair trade, and migration, National Parks, earthquake preparation, Antarctica, deforestation, international trade and living in Sao Paulo.
Each mystery puts the pupils at the forefront of their own learning. Using around twenty statements, they will need to explain a process or series of events related to one of the key issues. Depending on how much support the teacher wishes to give suggested statement groupings, focus questions and outcomes for different learning styles are provided for each mystery so every pupil can access the learning objectives.
The role-plays give pupils a scenario or challenge to tackle, normally in a group of four. Many of the issues require conflicts to be addressed and resolved, with support materials again provided. Background information can be used as evidence to support or oppose a point of view, whilst writing frames will help to structure the response of less-able pupils.
The note pages provide essential guidance for each activity and useful Webster to facilitate further exploration of each issue.
This collection provides an exciting and interactive way to introduce pupils between the ages of 11 -14 to the issues and conflicts surrounding key geographical topics whilst allowing them to make their own decisions with careful guidance.
