There are 20 questions on each sheet of test questions. They are useful from the age of 9 upwards. The answer sheet explains the rules under which the questions are asked. Pupils can draw up their own answer page in exercise books or on file paper if preferred. Working space is provided for those who need to use pen and paper methods. Some pupils like to write down the question as they hear it. The sheets are graduated in some topic areas so the teacher can select the questions according to the ability of the group. The tests can be used as 'starters' to settle pupils and help them concentrate on work which should be already known; to assess the knowledge of a new group; as consolidation for work recently covered; as a lead into discussion on different techniques being used by the pupils to calculate the answer; to correct any misconceptions and expose individual weaknesses. As questions can be asked in different ways, pupils become familiar with the vocabulary needed. The questions also help their listening skills. The timing for the completion of the questions can start at the discretion of the teacher and the questions used again at a later date to encourage quicker responses to the questions. The rules should always be made clear before beginning a test. Answers can be self-marking so the pupils are immediately aware of their progress and of their individual difficulties.
