Drama is always welcome in the classroom and can be used to great effect as a tool to enliven the maths lesson. The often sad, sometimes funny, very human stories of the people behind the mathematics can help both students and teachers towards a greater understanding and appreciation of the mathematical ideas studied at school. This play, consisting of a prologue and three scenes, linked by a narrator, is based faithfully on the life of the great mathematician Blaise Pascal. The aim is to awaken learners' curiosity and challenge pupils to have fun whilst tackling some quite complex mathematical problems. Blaise Pascal was always interested in games, dice, competitions and most interestingly, how well one can predict winning a game. He also designed the first calculator, in order to help his father with his work. He was totally in love with mathematics and had to beg his father to allow him to study Geometry. This play brings that story to life, and includes some of the sad and fascinating events in Pascal's life.

There are eleven work sheets at the end of this play based on what has been learned about Pascal: Pascal's Pseudonym (one worksheet); Pascal's Triangle (six worksheets); the Problem of Points (one worksheet) and Pascal's Mystic Hexagram (three worksheets). They are easily printable and the solutions, provided for the teacher, are detailed and helpful. They can be used at the teacher's discretion according to the age of the pupils and their ability.
