These notes are intended to explain, as clearly as possible the organic chemistry required for the AS Edexcel exam.
Most A-level students find organic chemistry to be the hardest section of the chemistry course.
The notes summarise each topic and explain the chemical reasons for each of the reactions involved. There are sections on bonding in organic chemistry, alkanes, alkenes, functional groups in general, isomerism, halogenoalkanes and alcohol's amongst others. Test tube reactions for various functional groups are summarised on one page. Practical techniques such as recrystallisation and fractional distillation are explained in detail. Attention is also drawn to health and environmental issues where they are relevant.
The notes could be given out by teachers as class handouts and used as a basis for class discussions. They could also be used as a revision summary by students working on their own.
At the end three tests are included with similar questions covering the whole course. It is hoped that students, who are given them in sequence, on say successive weeks, will find that they make a progressive improvement.
