A Christmas Carol - Workbook, Video and Audio Tape

This workbook, video and tape package ensures a differentiated approach that caters for the needs of mixed ability groups containing Gifted and Talented pupils as well as early stage EAL pupils, from a range of ethnic backgrounds. It incorporates a method of teaching to motivate boys by offering a task that is broken down into sections. It also introduces a simple essay structure that can be as a writing frame, but then learned and reinforced as a structure for later work.

Designed to lead to an essay on a Pre-1914 text, it is particularly suitable for use with Years 10 and 11 English classes but could also be used lower down the school to meet National Curriculum requirements in comparing texts, Reading in the English Literacy Heritage and Media. The pack includes sufficient material for teachers to choose whether they want to use it for study of either text or film - losing the comparative element and increasing the response to Media will not detract from the final outcome.

Weaker pupils can use the writing frames prescriptively, as they offer extra support in the form of key words and quotations. The use of a broader, more generic, framework allows brighter pupils the freedom to experiment with both structure and content.

The five sections of the unit can be taught as separate entitles, allowing teachers to choose the topics they wish to cover. The five sections are:

  • The Presentation of Scrooge
  • The Presentation and Relevance of the Three Spirits
  • Use of Language
  • Themes
  • A personal study of an aspect of the text

Video: Digitally re-mastered, Alastair Sim's Scrooge is the all time favourite Christmas family film and a genuine classic of British Cinema. This pack also includes an exclusive new talking book reading of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol read by George Cole, on two audiocassettes
