A First Look At Latin is aimed at pupils in Year 6 and Year 7 and is designed to enhance and to stimulate awareness of English as much as to acquaint with the basics of Latin. Wherever possible, the Latin vocabulary has been linked to that of English and to use a manageable number of words in order to illustrate the basics of Latin grammar.

Emphasis has been given to nouns and adjectives, whilst a limited number of verbs has been introduced having an infinitive as the direct object. Thus it has been possible to keep within the limits of the nominative case, single and plural.

Whilst it has been the author's aim to bring the pupil's attention to Latin and classical influences in a variety of ways, it has been left to the teacher's discretion as to how much mythology and history should be included. 'A First Look At Latin' gives sufficient material to form a solid foundation for the student who proceeds to Latin at GCSE level and at the same time indicates linguistic, cultural and historical avenues for exploration should circumstances permit.
