Activities Around Reading is a resource designed to accompany independent reading lessons. It will also be beneficial in English lessons to clarify pupils' understanding of literature and as an accompaniment to class texts, as well as being a valuable resource for SEN and EAL teachers and librarians.
It will serve as an introduction to the concepts used in literature to discuss and write about stories such as:
- Exploitation of genre
- Characterisation
- Setting
- Plot
There are also a number of other activities, which focus on:
- Creative writing
- Picture stories
- Book sleeve design
- Recording interviews for radio
The activities are designed to be flexible and once pupils have a sound grasp of the concepts introduced in the resource, they will be able to work on most of the activities independently or in small groups.
The text was written to cater for mixed ability teacher and a number of them have been differentiated for SEN and EAL students. The pack includes a Reading Log, an Activity Log Sheet and a Self-Assessment section so that pupils can keep a record of books read and work completed.
Activities Around Reading is designed to enhance pupils' awareness of the ingredients of good story writing, to encourage them to reflect on their own reading habits and to promote their enjoyment of reading.
