This booklet has been designed to help 'Early Years' teachers working with four and five year old children. It contains activities, which will help children develop early literacy skills. The activities aim to develop these skills in a fun way through repetitive practice, building self-confidence and increasing memory skills.
The activities cover the following areas:
- Letter Sounds
- Matching upper and lower case letters
- Alphabetical order
- Recognising frequently used words
- Spelling frequently used words
- Recognising and creating rhyming strings
Photocopiable resources accompany each game. They can be photocopied straight onto card and laminated for use in the classroom. Although the activities can be used in school, the instructions for the games are written in a parent-friendly way. This means that specific games can be copied onto paper and sent home with children for parents to play with their children. Parents will therefore be able to help their children by reinforcing and building on the literacy skills that are being taught at school.
The pack saves teachers' time and all the games have been trialled by children in the classroom and at home. Parents have reported that the games are stimulating, fun and easy to play.
When the activities are sent home to parent's teachers need to stress:
- Children learn best when they practice for a short while
- Repetition of the same games and activities is very beneficial
- Adult modelling helps children understand and is a very powerful teaching tool
Overall parents must be instructed to keep it short, simple and fun! The 'Please Remember' notes can be attached to the games to reinforce the messages.
