It is not the teaching of basic number work in our schools that has led to the drastic decline in numeracy in Britain – it is how we reinforced the teaching. A lack of reinforcement inevitably will lead to a lack of retention. Whilst chanting tables is a useful for of reinforcement, pupils are unlikely to find this interesting. This will lead to teachers and parents having to overcome ‘boredom/resentment’ factors. Each of the addition puzzles is designed to translate into some form of a joke, tongue twister, silly comment/statement. Once a child finds a format of puzzle that appeals to them, they can work through a whole set of the same kind of puzzle (the idea being to get the child to practice their number work, not to spend their time working out 110 different types of puzzle.)
Most of the puzzles are self marking (i.e. no need for teachers/parents to spend hours checking the answers unless the child goes disastrously wrong with the number work). Answers, for reference purposes, are supplied at the end of the document.
