African Art consists of three projects in different media - Ceramics, Painting and Mixed Media - and is written by an experienced teacher for pupils aged 11 to 12 of mixed ability. Each project starts with the idea of direct observation, which leads to the exploration and development of ideas, an examination of the work of relevant artists, and investigation and experimentation in a variety of media. The projects encourage pupils to adapt and make decisions, and to apply their knowledge and understanding, leading ultimately to the final piece. This pack aims to build on pupils' earlier experience and to encourage research as well as the use of sketchbook and portfolio.

African Art aims to provide pupils with a good introduction to art from different cultures, providing them with opportunities for comparing and contrasting, as well as for personal practice. The projects make use of clear illustrations, visual aids and advice so that both specialist and mainstream teachers will find instructions easy to follow. Suggestions for homework and extension work are also included.
