Animal Farm is a multimedia classroom resource for the study of Orwell's text. Students are encouraged to prepare, collect and analyse information about the novel as they study it. Over a period of time, students build a portfolio either on floppy disk or on the computer's hard drive. All along the way, students are encouraged - and rewarded by a diverse series of activities, prompts and writing opportunities.

Preparation

Students look at the concepts by listening to some of the greatest historical words of the past. The notion of character development is investigated as students collect their thoughts about different animals. A time line allows students to place the events of the last century along a continuum.

Collection

Each chapter requires students to complete a multiple-choice comprehension that, on completion, gives them access to a chapter summary. Students enter their opinions about the main characters and issues - Napoleon, Snowball, Boxer, education, speeches, commandments, and rebellions. Students can complete a sequencing activity about the major events of the chapter.

Analysis

All the notes entered by students are accumulative. Whatever they write as they follow an issue or character through the text appears in the latter half of the programme. Here they sort their notes and prepare an essay on their chosen theme or personality from the text.
