This resource provides a useful medium to improve the pupil’s knowledge of some fundamental aspects of chemistry such as the atomic structure of the first twenty elements and their positions within the periodic table. It provides both interactive software and files for hard copy and cut out cards.
The ‘hands on’ approach with formulae cards can improve the pupil’s ability to balance chemical equations. The teacher can use his/her larger version of the cards for display on a magnetic board or OHP.
The chemical reaction sheet can be used to predict the feasibility and products of a selection of reactions. It also displays the activity series of common metals and provides support for the balancing of equations. Information such as solubility and reactivity with water are included as well as the charge on the metallic ions. The compound is clearly displayed as oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, sulphates, chlorides and nitrates.
The layout format resembles a spreadsheet and each row and column is coded so that clear directions can be given by the teacher and answers identified.
A graphic file of the reaction sheet can be projected onto a screen for whole class teaching and revision and will complement the formula cards when balancing equations.
The chemical reaction sheet should be printed on card and laminated. The pupil can then use a dry board marker or OHP pen to try a selection of chemical reactions including metal and water, metal and acid, acid and base, acid and carbonate etc.
The flash movie presents animation and interaction to introduce the concepts of atomic structure and the periodic table and includes a quiz.
Once purchased, the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.
