We all know that pupils enjoy learning through games. This set of 34 battleships grids is designed to be used in language lessons to encourage pupils to communicate with each other in the target language. It adapts a well-known game to incorporate a wide range of topic vocabulary and structures. Rather than simply calling out the grid reference, pupils must say an appropriate word or sentence for the image in each square. The open-ended, predominantly pictorial, nature of these grids means that they can be used with all ages and abilities up to and including GCSE. You decide on the structure you wish to practise with the topic grid and, after a couple of introductory games against the whole class, your pupils will be able to use this structure and play independently against each other. This resource has proved to be an ideal activity to motivate boys to speak and also for foreign language assistants to supervise. You will be amazed by how many activities you can get out of a set of these grids! The topic grids, when displayed on OHT, lend themselves as lesson starters, plenaries or as revision exercises. Used with mini whiteboards they can be used to speed-test pupils’ knowledge of previously-learned vocabulary. They can equally be used to play an adapted version of “Connect 4”, either in teams or individually. The game-play grids are printed in English (for EFL pupils), French, Spanish and German and a blank copy is provided for use with other languages.
