This pack of worksheets is designed for use at different stages of the AS and A2 levels but is also suitable for other Advanced courses such as the IB. It covers the functions of particular molecules, or groups of molecules, which are commonalty, found in most Biology syllabi.

Topics covered include:

• Basic treatments of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids investigating how their structures are intimately related to their functions.
• Examples of particular molecules selected to show a wide range of adaptations to function for example collagen, insulin, lysozyme, wax, cholesterol, leaf pigments, cellulose and lignin.
• Membrane structure including surface receptors and the movement of ions and molecules across membranes.
• General ecological topics such as reasons for the variety of plant pigments, why fish die in acid lakes, eutrophication in the North Sea.
• Human health related topics: Single gene genetic disorders like sickle cell anaemia, lactose and galactose intolerance. A balanced view of LDL, HDL and cholesterol. Consideration of the functions of melanin and antibiotics. Bacterial endotoxins and exotoxins.

Throughout the resource there are questions on the topics, which will encourage students to look deeper into how biochemistry underlies the whole study of physiology and ecology. There are also suggestions for work which could include practical investigation or internet searches.
