Black Achievers/English as an Additional Language: Teachers’ Resource Pack

Cultural diversity: Do you have difficulty thinking of display ideas, finding display material on a multicultural theme or on significant Black Achievers? Do you need resources to support the targeting and monitoring of English as Additional Language students and to raise the awareness of all staff?

Aimed at the 7-16 year age range, this pack supports the importance of developing a diverse curriculum in all schools, reflecting and valuing all and preparing pupils for an increasingly diverse society, underlined in government acts, strategies, reports and inspections.

Included are two sets of display material on Black Achievers which, can be used for research and discussion. There are two matching activities to raise awareness. Ideas and materials for display work and other discussion areas are provided.

Templates to raise awareness and to enable staff to plan for monitor and evaluate the literacy needs of English as an Additional Language students are provided as well as other recording and monitoring tools.

The material provides a whole school approach to the educational inclusion of minority ethnic students: an sample English as an Additional Language Policy, summaries of two reports on English as an Additional Language and of recent legislation and the onus it places on schools to address race equality, an English as an Additional Language strategies sheet, suggestions of elements which should appear in a race equality database, a sample questionnaire to determine staff race equality training needs, information for staff on Ramadan, findings from research and multicultural maths ideas.
