These lively and colourful presentations containing 66 slides and supporting booklet cover four important Biology topics for 11-14 year olds. Each module contains a PowerPoint presentation, detailed scripts, background notes, worksheets and annotated answers. In additions there is a basic guide to using and customising PowerPoint for your own classes. The modules are:
CellsBasic plant and animal cell structure, how cells are adapted to their functions and how cells form tissues and organs. It ends with a mystery cell quiz.
The Menstrual CycleThis presentation is about the menstrual cycle and fertilisation. It describes the changes that occur week by week in a simple and understandable manner and then leads on to how a baby is made.
Adaptation Starting with how fish are adapted to living in water compared to a SCUBA diver, then the Polar Bear and Panda are investigated. The Camel and Welwitschia are used as examples of desert adaptation followed by the 'super plants', the lichens, which are able to live in the harshest of environment.
Variation Dogs are a good and familiar example of artificial variation. The students first compare dog and wolf. Then the enormous variety of dog breeds are considered, why so many, how are they bred?
These presentations could also be used up to 14-16 level as a basic but clear introduction to these topics. These presentations are directly linked to, and based on, the Biology modules of the latest QCA scheme.
