Irish History Pack P1 - Conquest and Rebellion

This series begins with the first Anglo-Norman involvement in Ireland in 1169 and is slanted from the British point of view. The first part concentrates on the gradual consolidation of English control, the dispossession of the Irish Nobility and the 'plantation' of the English on their land. Sporadic Irish resistance with foreign help, principally the Spanish in the 16th Century and French in the 17th and 18th Century, is followed by even greater subjection to British political and economical dominance.

The second part deals with the awakening of Irish consciousness, the development of Nationalism, and the inevitable conflict with British Imperial interests. This reached a climax in the second half of the 19th Century. The opposition of the Protestant minority resulted in the endless postponement of the settlement of the 'Irish Problem', and was only partially resolved by partition and the creation of the Irish Free State in 1921. Hopefully the series will throw light on the continuing crisis in Ireland in our time.

Period covered: 1170-1801.
