Crosswords are an ideal way of testing vocabulary and subject-related knowledge or reinforcing existing knowledge. They can be used as extension tasks, homework, odd-moment fillers or in any other way that you fancy. This collection contains well over 500 words or names that are in use in the Classical Civilisation curriculum, in 38 freeform crosswords. Some of the crosswords also have wordbanks provided. Every puzzle has a title to give you an idea of what it contains. There is also a blank grid to create your own freeform crossword.

Every page is clearly laid out with the crossword near to the top of the page and the clues, (or space to write them), underneath. The puzzles are of varying difficulty; some have no clues, only a wordbank of possible answers, some have clues and a wordbank, and some have clues only. Sometimes the wordbank may contain extra words that do not relate to that particular puzzle, sometimes only the correct answers are in it. And to make life a little easier, answers to all of the puzzles are provided at the end of the booklet.

Each page stands alone and can be easily photocopied. As standalone tasks a puzzle can be completed at one sitting or used to fill gaps over a period of time. There are 38 crosswords here - enjoy them

This resource follows the OCR Classical Civilisation syllabus (No. 1407) and covers papers 1 and 2, and most of the thirty-five topics.

Exercise relevant to Greek and Roman Civilisation (Paper 1) are provided and involve identifying illustrations, consolidating facts, and gaining confidence in relevant terminology; for Paper 2 (Greek and Roman Literature), students are helped to familiarise themselves with both verse and prose work in translation through questions about themes and characterisation. A section called ‘Points to ponder’ encourages students to think independently and because the topics are so varied, word-searches and similar exercises will assist in pin pointing facts and story lines.

Areas of this syllabus will also be useful to candidates following OCR’s Latin (1400) and Greek (1401) syllabi, where students have chosen to attempt the Roman or Green Civilisation Paper on their syllabus.

Working on the principle that a happy pupil will learn more than a bored one, these resources have been carefully created to enthuse and engage pupils of all abilities.

These new, exciting and innovative resources offer a variety of interesting tasks that will inspire, challenge and entertain pupils across the entire ability range. These resources are aimed specifically at the OCR GCSE course, but they are suitable for any similar course for 14 to 16 years old. For example, there is plenty of overlap with the AQA GCSE course. Pack 1 covers the five Green 'Civilisation' topics. Pack 2 covers the give Roman 'Civilisation' topics.

These resources are all 'pupil-friendly': they are all tasks that the pupils will enjoy. They will inspire the pupils and encourage debate and discussion among them. I have addressed, where possible, the eight intelligence's, and so some of the exercises may appear, perhaps, a little unconventional.

These resources were developed to fill part of the vacuum left by the lack of a Classical Civilisation textbook. I have produced a set of classroom and homework tasks that the teacher will be able to use alongside his, or her, more traditional 'fact-based' lessons.

Some of the sheets have instructions and, where applicable, answers attached, others are quite straightforward and need no 'blurb'. Some exercises can lead to several different 'correct' answers. This is quite deliberate, as it will lead to a lively debate amongst your pupils!
