This material has been developed to help students aged 16 - 19 studying Descartes' Meditations as a set text for AQA AS Philosophy (PLY3). It aims to provide the material in a lively and accessible manner to students who are new to philosophy, and is structured for exam success. Key concepts are clearly illustrated, with questions on each section, and a teacher pack with suggested answers. Supporting PowerPoint presentations are provided, and can be produced as further handouts.
The topics are divided into sections relating to the AQA syllabus, covering the Method of Doubt, Cogito, Wax Experiment, Trademark and Ontological Arguments, Mind and Body, and Proofs of the Material World. Objectives are listed for each section to guide learning, and the materials are provided in convenient packs that can be distributed as an entire pack, or broken down into topics. The materials make this difficult text both accessible and enjoyable to students of a range of abilities and learning styles. In some sections, more advanced material is included for more able learners and the PowerPoint presentations give visual support to the topic booklets. Students (and teachers!) find that the breakdown of topics makes the text seems less daunting, and guides them clearly on how to include key information in exam questions. Much of the subject content can also be used in the Theory of Knowledge module, relating to Rationalism. There are frequent extracts from the text to familiarise students with the original language in manageable chunks.
Trials of this long-overdue resource have proven an increase in achievement to above national benchmarks.
