This Microsoft PowerPoint XP display is a new approach to introducing students to the life and work of Dylan Thomas. It uses many photographs from key places in his life including his childhood home, Cwmdonkin Park, New Quay, Laugharne and more. As such, it enables students to get a context for understanding his poetry and 'Under Milk Wood'. Quotes, key questions and a brief biography are also part of the resource which all help deepen student understanding.
This resource provides teachers with a 'second voice' which is always useful. As a PowerPoint display it has the benefit of being a novelty (and PowerPoint is really used - this is not just a blue background with text!) and therefore a change of teaching style for the students. It's simple to use - just click the mouse once a slide has finished to move onto the next slide but it also has more uses if the computer/whiteboard is connected with the internet as there are sites to visit to increase students' experience. (Hear Dylan Thomas reading his own poetry, 'virtually' visit the Boathouse at Laugharne...). This resource is an exceptional way to introduce GCSE and A Level students to the life and writing of Dylan Thomas.
