This material has been developed to help students following Edexcel’s Entry Level Specification in Information and Communication Technology (8918). It aims to provide structured and interesting material to engage students of lower ability or EAL students. The material is, therefore, aimed to be fully inclusive. Elements of the course can be taught alongside GCSE. The material would also be useful at KS3 to prepare students for end of key stage ICT examinations.

All four units are covered by the material including the two centre assessed and the two externally assessed units. The four units cover using databases, using spreadsheets, using word processing/desktop publishing software and accessing information. The material has been designed to appeal to students and to broaden their general knowledge through the use of interesting scenarios.

The learning context of the specification is based upon the National Curriculum strands:

1. Finding things out
2. Developing ideas and making things happen
3. Exchanging and sharing information
4. Reviewing, modifying and evaluating work as it progresses

The qualification is 100% internally assessed through the delivery of 4 core units – 50% of this is through centre set tasks and the remaining 50% through Edexcel set tasks. Students can achieve at either levels 1, 2 or 3. Achievement at levels 2 and 3 presume achievement at the prior level too.

Each unit has a full set of resources that have been designed to be accessible to students with special educational needs. The sheets are intended to be used as practice for all assignments and are accompanied by separate worksheets that can be used as evidence for the portfolios. Few additional resources are required, but these are all contained on the accompanying CD-ROM. All materials were prepared using Microsoft Office 2003.
