This resource is geared around the learning of 39 Geography spellings and their meanings, for pupils aged 11-14, using different exercises to ensure that they are learnt.
These words have been identified by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) as causing common errors among pupils aged 11-14, and which they should be able to spell. All pupils will know how to spell some of the words, but this pack will enable accurate identification and monitoring of those words which need consolidating.
This pack has assessment and monitoring record sheets for teachers and pupils to monitor progress made in reading and spelling the target words. There are two spelling matching activities, a bingo game, word-squares and a multiple choice activity. Cloze exercises to aid understanding of the words are supplied, as are the answers. Geography word sheets, when enlarged, provide an ideal, yet simple, classroom display resource which can be used to aid memory and to help learn the spellings.
With clear links to the National Strategy for Literacy and Learning these materials provide a useful additional approach to supporting pupils’ learning.

A set of Geography alphabet copying masters for specialist Geography rooms, designed to contribute to the literacy impact of the environment and add visual stimulus by displaying essential vocabulary in an attractive and easily absorbed format. The alphabet supports developing literacy skills for ages 8 to 16 by matching vocabulary with appropriate graphics for easier interpretation of words. A complete alphabet is usually placed in order around the room to aid alphabetic sequencing and to act as visual aids for the teacher, but they could also be used as flash cards. The complete set consists of forty-two black and white A4 masters with clear line drawings. The extra letter posters above twenty-six give alternative words for some letters in order to allow the display to be tailored to the age group or teaching topic. Each letter poster is designed for copying and then hand colouring by pupils to increase their sense of ownership of the words before laminating or mounting on card for display. Alternatively, posters can be put into A4 plastic folders fixed to notice boards to make them easy to change and keep children's attention on them from one lesson to the next. The specially designed Sassoon font is used throughout to support and link to handwriting development for younger pupils and to maintain clarity. find out more |
