This resource is geared around the learning of 50 History spellings and their meanings, for pupils aged 11-14, using different exercises to ensure that they are learnt.

These words have been identified by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) as causing common errors among pupils aged 11-14, and which they should be able to spell. All pupils will know how to spell some of the words, but this pack will enable accurate identification and monitoring of those words which need consolidating.

This pack has assessment and monitoring record sheets for teachers and pupils to monitor progress made in reading and spelling the target words. There are two spelling matching activities, a bingo game, word-squares and a multiple choice activity. Cloze exercises to aid understanding of the words are supplied, as are the answers. History word sheets, when enlarged, provide an ideal, yet simple, classroom display resource which can be used to aid memory and to help learn the spellings.

With clear links to the National Strategy for Literacy and Learning these materials provide a useful additional approach to supporting pupils' learning.

Kites and Flights CD-ROM

Subject: Geography
Level: Secondary
Age Group: 11 - 14
Order Number: 6018

This new book is an ideal resource for the teaching of Leisure and Tourism to the 11-14 age range. It aims to be a comprehensive and up-to-date teaching aid, conveniently divided into ten chapters, each dealing with a separate topic. These range from an examination of the leisure and tourist industry past and present, through the roles played by airports and hotels and to the diverse range of employment created both directly and indirectly.

The book considers a range of destinations and the different types of transport available, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Conflicting interests and the diverse needs of National Parks – using Dartmoor as an example – are also discussed. Drawing on similar examples, such as the Eden Project and Center Parcs, it encourages thought and debate about the place of education in tourism, as well as the impact of mass tourism itself on the world in which we travel. As this book is designed to compliment existing geography resources, it also aims to broaden children’s knowledge of global location, so a number of different atlas-based exercises are included. Contemporary issues such as sustainability and eco-tourism are also featured.

The book is lively, informative and illustrated. Ideal for mixed ability pupils, a range of exercises are included throughout, and subtly differentiated where appropriate. It is designed for ease of photocoping, and benefits from a comprehensive answers section and glossary, making it ideal for teachers who are not necessarily geography specialist’s or for supply teaching.find out more
