This publication has been written to assist the teaching of Textiles especially at examination level, to girls and boys in years 10 and 11 who have varying degrees of ability. The wide variety of topics can be used to introduce a new area of the syllabus, support existing material, be an aid to revision or for emergency cover lessons. Each topic area is ‘free standing’ and has its own teacher’s answers. The presentation varies according to the topic; in some cases photographs have been used to make topics more interesting and easier for pupils to understand. They also help the teacher if (for example) certain items of equipment are not available in school for the pupils to have a clearer understanding of the item being referred to. Also when teaching the sewing machine the photographs show the parts of the sewing machine that are difficult for pupils to see if the teacher is doing a ‘dem and do’ demonstation to the whole class. In other areas graphics have been used to illustrate information such as pattern markings.

Topics (all of which come with their own answers) include:

Textile equipment The sewing machine The sewing machine – comparison Faults that may occur when using the sewing machine Match the word to the correct description What could happen if? (Problems pupils have while sewing and using the sewing machine) What is wrong if? (More advanced problems) Materials, Fibres and Fabrics Pattern envelope observation Pattern layout Pattern markings Observation and understanding – child’s trousers School bag specification T-shirt design
