Family Ties is a study in play form of three generations of one family. It exposes and examines many of the current and important issues facing family relationships and values today. It is written in five sections with extensive follow up work after each section. This follow up work covers starting points, discussion work, written work and practical action assignments.
Family Ties responds to, and provides the opportunity to meet, the requirements laid down in the guidelines for PSHE and Citizenship. These guidelines contain repeated references to relationships within the family; references concerning change, divorce, separation, interdependence, choice making, support, tradition and the ability to observe one's own behaviour.
Family Ties is 'about the role and feelings of parents and carers and the value of family life'.
This resource could be used as a freestanding unit in a PSHE/Tutorial scheme of work or a cross-curricular undertaking.
Apart from developing and extending students ability to talk about relationships and feeling Family Ties sets out to allow students to 'recognise the changing nature of, and pressure on, relationships with friends and family and how to seek help'.
This resource also offers a literacy opportunity. Script reading, some simple role-play, listening and speaking in discussion would inevitable contribute to a school's literacy policy.
This material is specially prepared for PSHE and Citizenship at KS3 and KS4. It is accessible to all abilities, does not discriminate and offers differentiation by outcome.
