Film as Text lays the foundation for an appreciation of the terminology and concepts used when examining a film. Its progressive approach provides visual examples of the basic concepts associated with camera angle. The composition of a visual frame is then examined and this leads to an evaluation of film clips where these concepts are applied.
The PowerPoint approach allows for students to be engaged through a variety of intelligence's. The first benefit is that we have the actual visual representation on a screen. The medium being examined is actually in context on the screen but we have the benefit of looking at material in small bites. This study is enhanced through the audio commentary and all this is under the control of the individual teacher.
A teacher can look at a single concept and use the activity sheets to enhance a student understanding. The PowerPoint can be used as a teacher reference preparing for a class. It can also be used at the front of a classroom with a data show. Thus, a teacher is in control of both the technology and the amount of information being presented at any one time.
Internet sites are also provided at the end of the presentation. This provides students with the opportunity to research particular films or follow the career of a range of directors. Thus, the classroom learning is linked to the information in the wider community and a range of opinion and information is made available.
Film as Text consists of 42 photocopiable Student/Teacher Notes and 22 PowerPoint Slides on CD Rom.
Once purchase the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.
