Food is one of the big issues of our time. Not only nutrition, but many other aspects of the topic affect us as citizens.
The materials included in this pack are all about food. Activities include discussion and decision making concerned with issues which include:
- healthy food
- food hygiene and the law
- food miles
- diversity/food from different places
- food for celebrations
- obesity, mental health and bullying
- worldwide inequalities
- conservation of resources
Lessons are planned to build negotiation skills and have a common emphasis, namely perceiving and linking cause and effect. Finally, the activities contribute to a flexibility of thinking that can be used in academic subjects across the board.
The materials are written for use in Citizenship and PHSE lessons. They link to Healthy Schools initiatives and reinforce work done in Food Technology. They can be used with students in all secondary year groups. Teachers' notes give suggestions on variations, as well as issues that can be discussed in final plenaries.
The final section of the book is a series of 'Thought for the Week' type posters. They can be displayed at the same time as the activities are being done, or at different times, to provoke discussion and follow up activities.
