There are times when every PE Department has to retreat into the classroom. It's pouring with rain and the examinations are on the gym! The whole Department is on INSET! The Department is all sick! It's the Regional Meeting and all PE staff have to be there! Or you may be the only PE teacher left at school as all the rest are absent and the cover staff can't take outdoor lessons! This resource is designed for those times -material designed for non-specialist cover, which can be easily photocopied.

Students do not like having PE classroom lessons cancelled, especially in Years 7-9. Some of the more awkward students can be challenged in these circumstances. But students do enjoy football, so here are football wordsearches (the wordsearches are easy as no letter is used twice, but they do go in all directions, including backwards) and football crosswords of varying difficulty (but all are more awkward than the wordsearches). The hardest of the crosswords may benefit from students helping each other (perhaps in pairs or small groups) as a wide range of knowledge is assumed. Do think about your geographic area – a wide range is here, including Scottish and Welsh material! To offer variety it may be useful to photocopy a wordsearch on one side and a crossword on the other. Set a crossword as a PE challenge or for homework.
