This resource examines the merit of literacy through a variety of activities suitable for different ability groups, from complete beginners to advanced level students. It contains ideas to help you write your own policy and apply it to teaching and testing vocabulary and grammar, as well as marking written tasks. Primary school teachers will find suggestions to select linguistic structures and integrate them into games and display of pupils' work. In a Secondary context, Heads of Department should use this material to assess the impact of literacy on the delivery of their syllabuses and formulate suitable targets for their own development plan.

Using a variety of font types and sizes, as well as graphics and illustration, each section attempts to provide the user with a visually appealing material that can be easily adapted into worksheets and enlarged into posters.

Piloted with pupils and students, the activities described stem from daily classroom practice and sum up the author's fifteen years of teaching eleven to eighteen year olds in English schools and also convey his belief, that discussing teaching styles and sharing views on methodology becomes a productive counterpart to the individual experience. Whilst the emphasis on linguistic structures and accuracy acts as a rigorous guideline, enabling learners to speak and write better simply cannot take place without the provision of a stimulating content. In that sense, literacy has to be creative to be enjoyable and successful.
