Ghastly and Gruesome is the third in a well received series of stimulus materials based around poetry, drama and prose on the topic of horror.
Designed, tested and used in the secondary school age range (for pupil's aged 11-16) the materials focus on short extracts from writers such as Defoe, Dickens, Conan Doyle, Rider Haggard. Comic relief is provided with an extract from Jerome K. Jerome, and the classic tale 'The Monkeys Paw' is dramatised. The extracts are supported by worksheets, which focus on literacy skills, comprehension, research, personal and descriptive writing, letters and newspaper articles, genres and characterization, and expression of personal opinion.
The stimulus materials and worksheets range from fairly simple to more complex and should engage readers at a variety of levels. Recommendations for wider reading and ICT research are included and offer plenty of opportunities for extension activities.
