History Key Skills - Starters and Plenaries, is a set of fun and challenging exercises, which aim to teach and reinforce key historical concepts, as stipulated in the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3. Each activity is written to last for a maximum of 15 minutes and can be used as a starter at the beginning of a lesson or as a plenary activity to round off a lesson. Alternatively, the exercises could be used in class or for homework during an Introduction to History module/unit in Year 7. The skills taught and tested include: identifying different units of time (AD & BC etc), timeline reading and construction, chronological awareness, identifying anachronisms, causality and consequence, differentiating between fact and opinion, historical significance, examining evidence/sources for relevance and meaning and empathic understanding.

The activities are intended to be accessible to all levels of ability, whilst appealing to a range of different learning styles. Where possible, eye-catching visuals are included to reinforce understanding of difficult vocabulary. The materials are intended to engage pupil interest in the content, through stimulating discussion and active participation wherever possible.

These are tried and tested ways into a lesson and have proved to be successfully employed in the classroom.
