This adaptable new history resource is designed to encourage literacy skills in Years 7 - 11 in a lively an engaging way. The resource comprises sets of fictional newspaper front pages:

• Six already completed to varying degrees of competence - students can use these to compare and discuss what makes for an effective journalistic style.
• A set of eighteen half completed front pages with illustrations and headlines already filled in - students have only to fill in the text areas.
• Five blank front pages - giving the more able greater creative scope in drawing their own illustrations and creating an appropriate logo for their newspaper.

History Through Headlines encourages the development of communication though reading and responding to a range of sources including pictures when planning and carrying out historical enquiries. Promoting discussion about the past it gives students the opportunity to present their findings in a variety of ways.

The front pages can be used to differentiate students by task, rather than purely by outcome (a useful tool when OFSTED inspects the work of classes) and in its entirety History Through Headlines can comprise the basis of an emergency lesson plan.
