The series begins with the Celtic bedrock and concentrates on the impact of the Middle Eastern cultures from the fertile crescent. Native European civilizations are dealt with in more detail. The momentous influence of the Roman Empire is traced through Byzantine, Carolingian and the Holy Roman Empires, and there is special consideration of the impact of Christianity and Islam. The series ends with the Renaissance.
