This pack is designed for students in Years 7 and 8 who read well below their chronological age. They may be dyslexic or have MLD, or simply have been left behind by the Literacy Strategy, but they need to learn to read competently, and they need to learn fast.

All the texts are long enough to be worthwhile and build confidence, but not so long that children are daunted or intimidated by them. The illustrations make them very user friendly, and give context clues.

The pieces teach reading through repetition of high frequency words and regular phonic patterns. More importantly, new readers develop skills of prediction using pictures and context. Previous knowledge and interest in the subject matter are employed to good effect, to build word recognition and confidence.

The passages are best used with small groups, who predict, discuss, read, and work out difficult words together. However, they can be used for work with individual children, perhaps by parents, or older pupils who have learned how to do paired reading. They are written to follow on from I can read now! Animals.
