This is a new, exciting resource aimed at encouraging 11 to 14 year olds to start writing their own original examples of what they would call ‘proper’ poetry. The first section, ’Breaking the Ice’, provides students of all abilities with many fun models that should make it easy for them to write successful poems, with the emphasis on getting the words on the page, then experimenting and playing with them. Using topics such as alliteration, parts of speech, found poetry and likes/dislikes, the lessons are organised in a workshop style, providing entertaining examples and promoting group work and sharing. Each topic includes suggestions for further development with links to other disciplines, like the performing arts. In section two, ‘Tools of the Trade’, the focus is on figures of speech, particularly simile, metaphor, rhyming and form. These lessons may be used at any appropriate stage, in conjunction with the writing in section one, or as completely separate areas of study, and use the same, close guidance techniques with plenty of examples, to encourage the students to become more self-critical and sophisticated.
