This unit on Islamic Art has been designed to inspire pupils aged 14-16 to develop a unit of coursework for controlled assessment for GCSE art or equivalent. There are 10 modules with extension tasks and elements can be taken from any of these to provide a comprehensive component of interesting and varied cultural work. All the modules meet National Curriculum standards of Investigating, Making, Knowledge and Understanding, providing pupils with the opportunity to solve problems and make imaginative decisions as well as learning many new skills and techniques. Every module presents occasions to be creative and make connections with artists and there are ideas on how to expand and develop pupils’ individual work. There are also many key words to learn, some of which are repeated throughout so that each module could be used as a one off task. Information for mounting art work and compiling and developing sketchbook ideas is included in many of the modules and any work completed on the sheets can be cut out and imaginatively mounted in sketch books. Patterns feature strongly in Islamic art and there are occasions for pupils to record representational responses through direct experience. Each module presents the opportunity to exploit a wide range of materials with suggestions for both 2D and 3D outcomes, together with extension tasks and further projects. All modules relate work to social, historical and cultural contexts. There are teacher’s notes for every module and these include the materials needed for that project. Most modules could be set as a cover lesson and used by non-specialist teachers.
