Key Factors Shaping Television Schedules have been developed for teaching and learning of AS/A Level media studies. The material is designed to support coursework and examination preparation focussing on the study of media determinants. The resource is made of 27 PowerPoint slides providing factual and up to date case study examples identifying those factors shaping television content and scheduling. The resource has been structured to allow for flexible use by teachers. Media determinants such as regulatory controls, financing, new technologies, audiences and professional practice are examined one at a time. Case study examples of the five main television broadcasters aim to provide students with accessible and detailed illustrations of media determinants. Opportunities for assessment and further work are provided with each case study. The content and structure of the material intends to encourage open discussion and debate on issues of quality versus competition and standards versus deregulation. The slide content and activities are presented in a context appropriate for WJEC, AQA, OCR and Edexcel Media Studies.
