Due to the popularity of the electronic keyboard, some very good examination syllabi have also become available, enabling electronic keyboard studies to be nationally accredited, as is the case with the wide range of orchestral and bank instruments, and with the voice.
What still seems to be lacking, however, is a range of graded electronic keyboard performances pieces, which are judged to be at or about a certain level of difficulty, giving the pupil and teachers a range of attractive pieces for practice or performance at that level.
Keyboard for Classes Grade 5 offers a twenty pieces, which are judged to be at or about Grade 5 level. All the pieces are given in standard notation, and also with optional note named notation for convenience in the classroom. A paper for teachers on the principles of classroom music assessment is included. This paper is accompanied by assessment worksheets for students and teachers, which may be used in the classroom if wished. There is also an information sheet on the use of the in built keyboard technology for assessment purposes, and early use of these functions is encouraged, in order that the best learning outcomes may be achieved. Finally, the resource offers a Keyboard Chord Bank, which contains the commonest chords/chord symbols that are likely to be encountered when learning keyboard. This is a useful short dictionary of chords, and these are set out of notation, and with the chord note names and chord symbols for each individual chord given.
The author hopes that this resource will prove to be a very useful follow up to the earlier publication Keyboard for Classes, which is an entirely appropriate access point to keyboard studies for school classes, and to the recent publication Keyboard for Classes Grades 3 and 4.
