This imaginative open-ended story embeds simple French into a more sophisticated English text, and is an entertaining way to support comprehension and vocabulary work with 11 to 13 year olds.
One of the problems of teaching elementary French is the discrepancy between the pupil's general level of development and the basic level of their foreign language. Most of the material designed for years 7 and 8 is restricted in content and they don't start seeing imaginative material in a foreign language until their skills are more advanced. Therefore they think that foreign languages are unimaginative, and just about asking the way to the Post Office, or asking for a ham sandwich.
This resource subverts that by giving them foreign language in an imaginative setting. It is more at their general intellectual, social and psychological level, and the story contains humour, exaggeration and surreal impossibilities, which the students enjoy.
The English supports their comprehension. Pupils find it relatively easy to work out what the new vocabulary must mean when it is inserted in English text they understand. They can continue the story themselves, produce labeled illustrations, and dialogues can be acted out. They can also write their own texts along the same lines.
The resource works best when used along with other strategies and can usefully be used as a break from standard lessons to introduce or reinforce vocabulary and structures.
