The Managing Portfolio - These student booklets are six ways for students to access information relevant to their lives. The series includes:
- Managing Your Stress
- Managing Your Panic
- Managing Death & Loss
- Managing Your Exams
- Drugs and Alcohol
- The Sleep Solution
They form an informative, educational and reassuring basis for students age 11-18 who face the turmoil of adolescence.
With the growth of PSHE as part of the National Curriculum their content enables pupils at Key Stage 3 and 4 the opportunity of dipping into subjects which will concern them through their young adult years.
The author, an experienced student counsellor for the last 16 years, chose these topics based on her extensive work with young people and has used them successfully in her own workplaces.
Each booklet is self-contained and explains problems commonly encountered in each area; teaches students how to tackle the problem, and how to seek further help. The booklets can be used as an adjunct to PSHE sessions, and can help in lesson planning for teachers. The booklets could also be made available in school libraries so that students can access the information at the time and pace they chose. This is especially valuable for those who find group work difficult.
Finally, the resources help students to begin to take responsibility for themselves, an essential part of growing up. For example, Managing your exams provides charts and tables for students to use in their own way; and in Managing Panic there are helpful relaxation techniques students can teach themselves and practice. The combination of topics in the booklets will also help students to start realising their own identity and enable them to take responsibility for themselves.
