Mathematics Baseline Assessment gives the teacher a straightforward, easy to use tool which will establish the level a student has achieved on the National Curriculum scale of mathematical skills. Simple to administer, mark and interpret, it creates a profile of mental mathematics, non-calculator and calculator skills for each pupil in a group and the group as a whole.

In a world where it is increasingly necessary for teachers to demonstrate how much progress students have made and to be aware of where they are failing, testing and recording against national criteria has become the norm. Proving progress is now a requirement for passing threshold stages and formal recording is mandatory in many educational institutions. Mathematics Baseline Assessment has been created in the image of Year 6 SATs papers to answer these needs.

Three papers are presented. Test A presents a range of questions which must be solved without the use of a calculator; Test B allows the use of a calculator; and Test C looks at mental mathematical ability. The three papers are structured so that early questions are pitched at level 3 and progress to level 5. The accompanying spreadsheet allows teachers to quickly record the results and assess student's performance individually, by paper and as a cohort.

There are a broad range of questions and each question is cross referenced to a National Curriculum topic so that an individual's failings can be quickly identified. The spreadsheet of results therefore provides a permanent and meaningful snapshot of a pupil's skills at a given time and act as a guide to weaker areas which can be targeted for improvement.

Once purchased, the CD-ROM can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.
