This material has been produced to help pupils reinforce and develop their key mathematical skills during their first years of secondary school. They will be particularly suitable for Special Needs students in helping them master the core mental and recording skills. It aims to provide a structured work programme suitable for all abilities. Importantly, it will equip students with the confidence to move onto the next level of learning. There are a variety of learning strategies, problem solving activities and test sheets. The work can be used in a number of different ways.

The work is progressive and has been divided into sections A to D. Each of the sections A to C include units of work involving different learning strategies, a variety of problems and check test sheets. Section D includes answer sheets, record sheets and sample mental/oral arithmetic questions for use at home or school.

It is not essential that the child is able to use all the strategies confidently. It may be that they are happy using just one or two when solving problems. Also, although the work is progressive, children may work at a higher or lower unit depending on their ability. It is not necessary for a child to complete all the units. The sheets can be used to supplement work within the classroom, for homework assignments or for parents to use with their child at home.

Most importantly, the material has been designed to help pupils develop and use a range of processes, so that they can become more confident when applying skills to problem solving situations.
