Maths Assessment Tests for Lower Ability Students

This resource consists of 6 modified classroom tests for the lower ability student. It has minimal text for those students with poor literacy skills or who have difficulty reading English i.e. have English as a second language or Deaf students using British Sign Language.

The tests cover many of the GCSE topics and compliment the resource 'Lower Ability Mathematics Worksheets'. The test situation is often extremely threatening to the lower ability student and these tests help to alleviate the fear. Regular testing is vital to the learning process so these tests can be very beneficial. Each test is laid out in using the same format, which again helps the student, as familiarity tends to relieve worries! In the author's experience if the student recognises a test, then it is less of a concern and so helps them relax a little under test conditions.

This resource includes a student log sheet where the student can record their score for each test. If the tests are given regularly then improvement and progress can easily be monitored (by student and teacher). Lower ability students rarely have the opportunity to recognise their own progress and this clearly helps. It is a great confidence builder if their scores can be seen to increase over time! Teachers can also use these tests to assess which skills the student has learnt and which need reinforcing.
