This scheme of work, intended for students in their first year of secondary education aged 11-12, offers a stimulating series of eighteen lessons grouped into topics. It was written to encourage students to reflect on their personal reading and to think about the differences between reading fiction and non-fiction. Depending on the level of English acquisition or their ability it can be used with slightly older or younger students. It explores reading fiction through study of openings from a range of novels and reading non-fiction by exploring Classified Directories. The 'Reading in Another Language' section has a dual purpose, exploring how the English language is structured and linking to Citizenship by placing students in the position of their EAL peers.

Other lessons include a Library session to build familiarity with Library systems - where possible a trained Librarian should be able to give a short talk on Library Classification and a link to the Neverending Story website.

As an aid to busy teachers the majority of resources are included in this pack, although some adaptation to suit the locality of schools teaching this unit would be desirable. All worksheets are photocopiable and some have been written with transfer to overhead projector in mind.

Most of all, though, the Scheme of Work is intended to be fun and to encourage young people to read!
