The Terminal Task component enables the candidates to develop their practical ability to use compositional techniques learned in Area of Study 2: Techniques of Melodic Composition. Candidates will be expected to communicate their compositional intention either through a performance on an instrument/voice, or through a performance using ICT, or by writing it down.

A choice of stimuli will be offered from a range of three; all require the composition to contain a melodic element. The melody can be developed in a style chosen by the candidate, which is appropriate to the stimulus. The stimuli will be: a rhythmic shape upon which the melodic response will be built; a note pattern from which the melodic response will be derived; a chord sequence which will provide the underlying harmonic basis for a melodic response.

This resource book is dedicated to 60 exercises in rhythm, 28 exercises in note patterns and 24 exercises in chord sequences. The exercises can be used for classwork or homework assignments. The resource book also contains the respective OCR assessment criteria.
