Pack E2 - James I
This pack introduces the Stuart dynasty in general and James I in particular. The Gunpowder Plot is explained in depth (9 sheets). Other sheets cover Britain's involvement in the Thirty Years War, through the marriage of James's daughter Elizabeth to Frederick, Count Palatine and the Plantation of Ulster, but the Colonisation of North America is covered in Pack E3.
The accession of James in 1603 completed the unification of the British Isles under one monarch, but Scotland retained a separate parliament until 1707, and Ireland until 1801. The union of parliaments caused the combination of the flags of St. George, St. Andrew and St. Patrick to make the Union Jack.
