Performance and Composition Projects

These three projects are aimed at pupils aged 11-16 years and will work well either as individual projects, or to compliment existing projects covering the concepts of ostinato, rondo form and parallel intervals. The numbers of pupils can be flexible and all projects are suitable for varying abilities. Teachers can adapt tasks to cater for varying degrees of musical literacy. All projects have opportunities to assess pupils' abilities in performing, improvising and composing.

1) Ostinato

• Pupils perform a modern ostinato piece together to a backing and then improvise individually using a pentatonic scale. Chord parts are included for keyboard or guitar players.
• In groups pupils compose a stinato piece in 3 or 4 parts using a pentatonic scale and perform to a backing.

2) Rondo

• Pupils perform a rondo theme to a backing
• Pupils compose episodes in groups using a pedal bass and 2-4 other parts. The whole piece is then performed as a class composition.

3) Parallel Intervals

• Pupils perform 'Parallel Lines' using parallel 3rds and 6ths to a backing.
• Pupils compose their own parallel piece in pairs based on the ideas used in 'Parallel Lines'

Scores for standard tuned percussion or keyboards. Parts are presented in different octaves and in Bb to cater for a variety of instruments.
