The Chemistry specifications at 'A2', and the first year of 'AS', carry the expectation that candidates will be familiar with some basic mathematical principles and be proficient in some key areas. The mathematical aspects can relate to graphical work and interpretations of rates of change; simple manipulations and transformations of formulae and an appreciation of the meanings of significant figures. The first requirement necessitates care in the selection of scales and construction of tangents and determination of gradient, and this is covered in detail in the Physical Chemistry Handbook. The use of logarithms and their inverses is explained, as is the correct way to present numbers resulting from calculations. An introduction covers simple linear simultaneous equations and their solutions, and another is concerned with units. The Physical Chemistry Handbook is aimed at students in post sixteen education, and although intended primarily for non-mathematics students all candidates could benefit from a copy! It could be used to support the teaching of a short course within the delivery of an advanced level programme. There is no other resource currently available written for this specific task.
