This book is an invaluable resource for all pupils and teachers of English including GCSE. It supports and encourages key skills of reading and writing, including spelling, style and vocabulary. It also provides valuable support for pupils with GCS, and encourages extra reading and critical analysis.

Reading is dealt with in the form of useful information regarding reading skills and reading in an exam, whilst pupils are also advised on private reading and its importance. In support of this, a page is set aside for the pupil to record and monitor their own private reading and there is a list of books with informative comment on each one. Easier texts are labelled for weaker readers, as are the more challenging pieces of literature for strong readers.

Writing is dealt with in an innovative and original way, where skills and techniques of good writing are isolated and explained, with support from examples. This uses the same approach of the 'Writing Index' used in Success in English.
