This book is an invaluable resource for all pupils and teachers of English including GCSE. It supports and encourages key skills of reading and writing, including spelling, style and vocabulary. It also provides valuable support for pupils with GCS, and encourages extra reading and critical analysis.

Reading is dealt with in the form of useful information regarding reading skills and reading in an exam, whilst pupils are also advised on private reading and its importance. In support of this, a page is set aside for the pupil to record and monitor their own private reading and there is a list of books with informative comment on each one. Easier texts are labelled for weaker readers, as are the more challenging pieces of literature for strong readers.

Writing is dealt with in an innovative and original way, where skills and techniques of good writing are isolated and explained, with support from examples. This uses the same approach of the 'Writing Index' used in Success in English.

The 39 pages of photocopiable pupil sheets include;
  • GCSE Preparation - including SEG and NEAB details and general study skills
  • Reading Skills and Private Reading - including 46 suggested books to read, pupil record sheet, analytical skills and use of quotations
  • The Writing Index - a guide to effective writing techniques, including depth, vocabulary, sentence structure, sentence length, similes and metaphors, punctuation and dialogue
  • Spelling and Word Confusions
  • Apostrophes
  • Essay Writing
  • Letter Writing

In addition, the seventeen pages of teacher information give a wealth of ideas for use, further examples of particular points and suggestions for further work.
